Port Fee Changes for 2017

Seattle, Washington (September 30th, 2016) - The Seattle Internet Exchange (SIX) is excited to announce port fee changes for 2017.

This has been a banner year for the SIX:

  • Largest member growth ever, with a net gain of 26 members (11%), and the year is not yet complete.
  • Substantial contributions have happened, much inspired by new equipment purchases. $150k given so far, with another $76k pledged.
  • Port and optic hardware pricing continues to decrease.
  • Reserve savings are healthy.

The SIX Board/advisors, factoring in growth, revenue, savings, and future needs, has come to the conclusion that fee reductions and simplifications are appropriate. We believe these new IXP fees are some of the lowest, if not the lowest, of any major (top 20) IXP in the world.(*)

The following one-time (NRC) fees/changes are effective January 1st, 2017. There is no MRC at the SIX.:

  • GigE:
    • Westin & KOMO & Sabey:
      • 1st port remains $100.
      • 2nd port remains $100 if >50% usage, else $500.
      • 3rd port lowers from $3k to $2k.
  • 10GbE:
    • Westin & KOMO & Sabey:
      • Lowers from $3k to $2k.
    • KOMO & Sabey:
      • Once 2x100GbE ISL is achieved with these nodes, networks can grow beyond 10GbE usage (currently 2x10GbE is only allowed for redundancy).
  • 40GbE:
    • Westin & KOMO & Sabey:
      • Rises from $8k to $10k, but optic becomes included.
      • Trade-in of slower port(s) for credit ceases.
  • 100GbE:
    • Westin & KOMO & Sabey:
      • Lowers from $16k to $10k, and optic becomes included.
      • Trade-in of slower port(s) for credit ceases.
  • Port fee is determined by pricing current on the date of LOA issuance or port configuration by SIX admins, whichever is earliest. Thus a circuit allocated in 2016 will be subject to 2016 fees, while a circuit allocated in 2017 will have the new fees.

We believe these changes will encourage further growth of the community in a sustainable fashion.
