New switches - Large Netflix donation - Fundraising

Seattle, Washington (August 26th, 2016) - The Seattle Internet Exchange (SIX) is excited to announce upgrades to the platform that will be happening in the coming months.

Our aging 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) switch will soon be replaced by a new Arista 7512R which will support our existing GigE and future 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE), 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), and GigE growth.

The KOMO Plaza and Sabey switches will be replaced with Arista 7280SR-48C6's with the goal being to support 100GbE in addition to 10GbE and GigE at these locations.

Once these upgrades are complete, the four core SIX switches will all be based on Arista technology. It has been 5 years since we first adopted Arista for our flagship switch, and we are happy to grow our relationship with this excellent switch vendor.

"We're proud to be a part of the next-generation fabric at the Seattle Internet Exchange as members transition to 100GbE networks. We look forward to our continued partnership with the SIX.", said Ariff Premji, Arista Networks.

As part of these upgrades, we reached out to the largest members, in terms of existing circuit capacity, and encouraged them to contribute.

"We are extremely excited to announce that Netflix stepped forward first and has contributed $75,000 to help enable modernization of the SIX switch infrastructure!", said Nikos Mouat, President of the Seattle Internet Exchange.

"Netflix firmly believes in the criticality of Internet Exchange Points and is pleased to help the SIX with this important evolution of their platform. The excellent work of the SIX Board and Operations team sets the standard for IXPs worldwide.", said Dave Temkin, Netflix.

Additional funding has been pledged for this effort and we look forward to announcing these donors after funds are received.
